Sonic Walkabout: Lakeview is a unique audio walking tour combining narrative discoveries with original music inspired by cultural and historic spaces in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood.
At each site you’ll hear about its history, often firsthand, and then how the site inspired the composer plus a short piece of music.
This is a self-guided tour and can the sites can be visited in order at your leisure. The tour takes about two hours if you do it all at once.

Music Box Theater– Chicago’s year-round film festival is housed in a classic building designed as one of the first off-loop movie palaces.

Sheil Park – This gem of a park is named for Bishop Bernard J. Sheil who was known as the “apostle of youth,” “labor’s bishop,” “apostle of the poor,” and “apostle of the underdog.”

St. Alphonsus – With its lofty bell tower covered in weathered green copper, St. Alphonsus has been a prominent feature of the six-way intersection of Southport, Lincoln and Wellington since 1896.

Athenaeum Theater – Built by German-American parishioners of St. Alphonsus, the Athenaeum Theater is the oldest continuously-operating off-Loop theater in Chicago.

(Former) Marshfield Savings and Trust – this gorgeous flatiron-style building now houses condos but was once housed a bank built by the only Olympic Committee president to ever also compete in the games.
