Sonic Walkabout: Lakeview

Sonic Walkabout: Lakeview is a unique audio walking tour combining narrative discoveries with original music inspired by cultural and historic spaces in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood.

At each site you’ll hear about its history, often firsthand, and then how the site inspired the composer plus a short piece of music.

To access the walking tour, download the Gesso App from the Google Play or Apple store.  Then choose Sonic Walkabout: Lakeview from the menu and you’re all set.

This is a self-guided tour and can the sites can be visited in order at your leisure.  The tour takes about two hours if you do it all at once.

Music Box Theater– Chicago’s year-round film festival is housed in a classic building designed as one of the first off-loop movie palaces.

Sheil Park – This gem of a park is named for Bishop Bernard J. Sheil who was known as the “apostle of youth,” “labor’s bishop,” “apostle of the poor,” and “apostle of the underdog.”

St. Alphonsus – With its lofty bell tower covered in weathered green copper, St. Alphonsus has been a prominent feature of the six-way intersection of Southport, Lincoln and Wellington since 1896.

Athenaeum Theater – Built by German-American parishioners of St. Alphonsus, the Athenaeum Theater is the oldest continuously-operating off-Loop theater in Chicago.

Dinkel’s Bakery – this Lakeview mainstay has served up Bavarian-style pastries and more for nearly a hundred years.

(Former) Marshfield Savings and Trust – this gorgeous flatiron-style building now houses condos but was once housed a bank built by the only Olympic Committee president to ever also compete in the games.

(Former) Wieboldt’s Department Store – the six-way corner of Lincoln, Belmont and Ashland has always been a shopping mecca and used to be the home of a slew of department stores including the fabled Wieboldt’s.

Schuba’s Tavern – Legendary music venue Schuba’s, housed in a Chicago landmark building, has hosted live music for decades and was the springboard that launched the careers of John Mayer and Dave Mathews among others.
