Specific Gravity: Student Ticket

From deep in the earth to the furthest reaches of outer space, Specific Gravity features music inspired by our physical universe.  The event will pair informal conversations with leading scientists about the topics at hand with performances of the pieces.  Specialty cocktails inspired by the theme will be served at the adjoining Carbon Arc bar.

Music to be performed features several Chicago premieres including Olga Neuwirth’s virtuosic Quasare/Pulsare for violin and prepared, “deconstructed” piano, Lois Vierk’s mercurial chamber work Red Shift inspired by astronomical phenomena and Christopher Stark’s Stars in Dead Reflection.

Giving the concert its name is Lansing McCloskey’s Specific Gravity, a percussion-heavy chamber work that takes inspiration from the formation process of gems in the earth’s crust. The program concludes with Paul Lansky’s masterful three-movement work Horizons.
