ACM’s Sound of Silent Film Festival, now in its thireenth year, feature newly composed scores performed live to modern silent films.
Eight composers will be commissioned to write scores for short silent films, all by living directors, between five and fifteen minutes long.
The films are in a wide variety of styles, all have been vetted by a review panel and chosen from a submission pool of more than a hundred.
Please respond to this email stating your interest, why the event appeals to you and any film scoring experience you have. Film scoring experience is not required, in fact most of the composers we commission are concert composers. Please include one PDF score for any of 2-6 instruments to represent your work.
Instrumentation is any combination of flute (doubling alto,) clarinet (doubling bass,) violin (doubling viola,) cello, piano and hand percussion. There is no keyboard percussion available for this. You would work directly with our percussionist to determine what’s available..
Submission deadline is January 25
Composers will be announced by January 30
Score receipt deadline is March 20
Commission fee is $500
Sound of Silent Film 2018 happens on April 14, 2018 at the Davis Theater in Chicago.
