The first of the two movies we’ve made which were shown on PBS was an hour-long documentary about our groundbreaking collaboration with Beijing composer Xiaogang Ye.
As an outgrowth of our Weekly Readings program in which we read and recorded a piece by a living composer every week and posted it to our website, we decided to try working with one composer and allow him to hear a piece recorded while he writes it.
Thanks to the Internet we could even work with someone on the other side of the world who we had never met before. Xiaogang Ye composed his work Datura in four installments and the musicians from ACM performed each installment at the Chicago Cultural Center as he sent them to us and posted them to our site for him to listen to.
The project became part of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silkroad Chicago project and was funded by United, Boeing and the city of Chicago among others. Filmmaker Dave Less and Seth Boustead traveled to Beijing to film part of the documentary and then in 2007 we screened it publicly at the Chicago Cultural Center at a sold-out event for which Xiaogang Ye was present.
This is, alongside Weekly Readings, is the project that put ACM on the map.
