Submit Your Score & Proposal for Concept Lab

Created by composers Seth Boustead and Will Rowe and hosted by Rockwood Music Hall in New York City, Concept Lab is an exciting exploratory music series featuring works in progress, improvised works and collaborative and multi-disciplinary projects in all stages of completion — a showcase of the newest of the new. and an exciting chance to watch the creative process at work in real time. We are inviting composers to challenge themselves, take risks, and try things they might not otherwise¬†to be enjoyed by an enthusiastic and understanding audience in a casual, productive, and fun setting. Both productive success and productive failure are part of the Concept Lab agenda, and each show invites all to feel the rough edges of the music-making experience.

Composers are invited to submit proposals for small chamber works utilizing 1-4 performers in any combination of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, or piano. Occasionally, Concept Lab will plan a specific challenge for a show, in which cases other instrumentations may be available. Stereo playback for electronic media is also accommodated. Finally, works for Concept Lab are limited to 15 minutes, including introduction of the work and any discussion/workshopping of the work with the players and the audience.

Works proposed for participation in Concept Lab may take any form: composers are encouraged to present different versions of the same piece, excerpts of unfinished pieces, ideas interacting with music or media in a way currently unfamiliar to the composer, a finished piece born out of a new process: the list can go on. The only limit is your imagination (and our production resources).

This year, Concept Lab will be produced on March 27th, June 19th, September 25th, and December 4th. If you are a composer interested in participating in this series, please submit your contact information, a score sample, and a project proposal in the fields below.
