Eastern Expressions is the world's very first intercontinental collaboration of its kind between composer and musical ensemble. Over the summer of 2006 ACM will collaborate with internationally recognized Beijing composer Xiaogang Ye, who will compose a brand new piece of music for us in four installments beginning in May and ending in August. ACM ensemble members will meet at the Chicago Cultural Center in Preston Bradley Hall and record the music as he sends it (these sessions are free and open to the public and are part of the city-wide program Silk Road Chicago) and these recordings will be posted with film clips and composer comments to the ACM website as we record them. We will demystify the compositional process and allow an online audience to hear a new piece of music from its first idea, through rewrites, to the final conception. The entire project will culminate in a final concert, Sounds of Modern China, on September 10th 2006, which will feature the commissioned piece by Xiaogang Ye and music of other internationally recognized living Chinese composers including Chen Yi, Zhou Long, Jay Alan Yim and Huang Ruo.
With its unique Internet based approach and
audience friendly demystification of the
compositional process, Expressive East will
revolutionize the way ensembles collaborate with
composers and the way audiences experience
new music!
