Five World Premiere Works to be Performed Live in Landmark Buildings Downtown

August 3, 2010 – ACM is proud to present Songs About Buildings and Moods, an event celebrating Chicago’s Architectural Legacy through live performances of newly commissioned works by Chicago composers. Five landmark buildings in and around the
Chicago Loop have been chosen.

The buildings have been chosen to represent forward thinking in different periods of Chicago architectural history and include the Monadnock Building, the Marquette Building, the Aqua Tower, the Chicago Cultural Center and the Harry Bertoia sculpture in the plaza of the Aon Center.

Guided tours will be given by docents from the Chicago Architecture Foundation and will include well-known figures like Lynn Becker. The tours will last about two and a half hours and will include background information on each building and a live performance of the music for each building. The composers will be on hand to talk briefly about how the building inspired the music they composed.

“This is a fascinating exploration of the interrelationship between music and architecture,” says Barbara Gordon of the Chicago Architecture Foundation. “Each building has its own particular acoustic properties and its own unique sound and the
composers will have a great time taking advantage of that.”

“Each building has been chosen for its historical relevance but also for its particular ‘mood’ or feel,” says Dave Hampton, an architect at Hampton Avery and also one of the composers. “From the dark interior of the Monadnock Building to the sunny vistas of the Aqua Tower terrace, we’ve really given the composers a lot to work with.”
