Carolina GomezBorn in Medellin, Colombia, Carolina Gomez started her musical training at age 5. She graduated from the Instituto Musical Diego Echavarria Music Highschool, the only school of its kind in Colombia, in 1994. She moved to Bogota to continue with her college education at the Javeriana University with the aid of a scholarship from the MAZDA Foundation for the Arts and Sciences. In 1997 Carolina was accepted into the Chicago College of the Performing Arts at Roosevelt University where she was also awarded a talent scholarship and from which she graduated in 2000 with honors. That same year she was accepted into the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony, and was awarded with a fellowship for the 2000-2002 seasons. Through the Civic Orchestra Ms. Gomez played under the baton of conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, William Eddins, Pierre Boulez, Michael Gielen, Neeme Jaarvi and Daniel Barenboim, among others. She was also a member of Musicorps, the community engagement and educational program of the Civic Orchestra. Carolina received her Master's degree from DePaul University in 2002 and is currently at that same institution pursuing a post-graduate degree, to be completed in November 2004.
Carolina has had extensive orchestral and chamber music experience. As an orchestral musician, she has been principal cellist of both the Roosevelt and DePaul University symphony orchestras, as well as being a member of the Festival Orchestra of the Europaisches Musikfest Stuttgart for the 2002-2003 seasons. Her chamber music experience includes attending the Colorado College and Manchester Chamber Music Festivals, as well as participating in numerous chamber ensembles at Roosevelt and DePaul. She has collaborated in chamber music performances with artists such as Eteri Andjaparidze and Stefan Hersh, both faculty members at DePaul University, and her performance of Mozart's piano quartet was featured in a live broadcast on WFMT. Carolina will partake in a year-long concert series in 2004-2005 that will include all of Brahms' Piano Quartets, in collaboration with pianist Eteri Andjaparidze and world renown violinist Ilya Kaler. She is currently a member of the Vincent string trio. Carolina has studied with cello professors Ludmil Vassilev, Svetoslav Manolov, Natalia Khoma and, currently, Stephen Balderston. She has performed in master classes with John Sharp, Desmond Hoebig, Amanda Forsyth and Yo-Yo Ma. She plays a German cello of unknown maker, dated from 1860.
