Frederick Glesser

Composer/flutist Frederic Glesser (b. 1956) is a native of Toledo, Ohio. Educated at Kent State University in Ohio (BMus 1978) and the University of Miami in Florida (MMus 1982), he has studied composition with Dennis Kam, James Waters, and David Stewart. He has also attended masterclasses at the Atlantic Center for the Arts with Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Martino, and has studied flute with Raymond DeMattia and Maurice Sharp (former principal flutist, Cleveland Orchestra).

Glesser's music has been presented at conferences, music festivals and events throughout the U.S., eastern Europe, Canada, and Brazil. Included among the numerous performers who have championed his music are such artists and groups as North/South Consonance, Kathleen Supové, Luis Gómez-Imbert, Max Lifchitz, Kesatuan, Lisa LaCross, Michael Linville (The New World Symphony), Peter Blauvelt, Anahit Nersisian (Armenia), Valery Matukhin (Ukraine), the Florida Symphony, the Akron Youth Symphony, and The Glass Orchestra (Canada). His compositions include works for small to medium ensembles, solo piano, and orchestra.

As a performer Glesser has been involved in presentations of among the most prominent flute repertoire pieces of the 20th century. Solo and chamber ensemble performances include Debussy's Syrinx (solo flute) and Sonata (flute, viola and harp), Hindemith's Sonata (flute and piano), Piston's Sonata (flute and piano), Rorem's Trio (flute, cello and piano), Varese's Density 21.5 (solo flute), Davidosky's Synchronism's #1 (flute and tape), Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, and Ingolf Dahl's Duo Concertino (flute and percussion). Orchestral appearances have included Kennan's Night Soliloquy (flute and orchestra), Griffes' Poem (flute and orchestra), Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, and Hindemith's Metamorphoses.

Glesser currently resides in Miami, Florida with his wife Elizabeth and son Harrison (age 16). His daughter Ashley (age 21), will be starting her senior year at Florida State University in the Fall of 2003..
